The Enterprise Challenge
This year ten year 10 students
had the opportunity to take part in an enterprise challenge
which involved running their own business. Could you be part
of the next enterprise challenge? Read on for details of
their success.

After three
successful months Polesworth’s Year 10 Enterprise Team have
been declared the county’s top fundraisers.
A team of Year 10
pupils (pictured above) were set the challenge to use
business ideas in order to make money for St Mary Anne
Evan’s Hospice in Nuneaton. They were given £50 initial
start-up capital, which was donated by Jaguar, in order to
launch their projects.
The students used
their initiative and entrepreneurial skills to devise money
making projects that they could run over the three month
period allocated.
Their first
project, named ‘Santa’s Little Helpers’ involved providing
refreshments for Year 12 parents evening, as there was an
obvious gap in the market. The refreshments followed the
Christmas theme and the group made their own Christmas
shortbread with the help of Mrs Knight. This project was
very successful and raised a great deal of money, especially
as their production costs were so low and the high demand
for their delicious shortbread meant that they could charge
a relatively high price.
The teams second
project, named ‘Project Cupid’ was definitely the most
successful and innovative idea. The pupils identified the
need for pupils to celebrate Valentine’s Day before students
left school for the half-term holidays. Not only did they
have to utilise their skills in persuasion to ensure that
this day could take place within school but also convince Mr
Crook to produce Valentine’s Keyrings to be sold and
distributed throughout the day. The Enterprise Team also
sold Valentines messages that were placed on the school
information screens and silk roses.
Despite the school
closure the pupils yet again worked their magic on Mr Clark
and managed to negotiate a non-school uniform day for pupils
for the rearranged Valentines Day. The day eventually took
place and a vast amount of money was raised on behalf of St
Mary Anne Evan’s Hospice.
The project finally came to an end for the students on
Wednesday the 14th of April at Jaguar’s Heritage Museum.
The Enterprise Team delivered a well polished and highly
professional presentation about their three month projects.
The defining moment came when the students unveiled the
cheque for £1259.53, which was by far the largest sum of
money raised by any of the local schools that entered the
enterprise competition.
