G.C.S.E. Drama is an exciting option and, if you decide to
take it, you will definitely find it enjoyable and rewarding
with a good mark at the end! Our results are some of the
best in the school and our A level course results are as
good as or better than most other schools, including the
private grammar schools! If you don’t believe us, just look
at the results for yourself!
We follow the AQA Drama course with lots of practical and
one exam paper at the end.
You will have 5 option lessons with either Mrs Grattan or
Miss Leftwich, 3 practical lessons in D1 and 2 theory in a
classroom.

Over the course, you will create 4 pieces of drama based on
different themes. At the beginning of Year 10, groups devise
their own stories about a child brought up in the wild who
is then taken in by scientists and foster parents. With your
group, you decide what happens to the child and the drama
you create is then performed to a year 7 class. They will
love you! Following this, we move on to the drama, horrors
and conditions faced by the soldiers in World War One! You
will develop your own stories based on real life diaries and
tales from the trenches.
In the summer term, we explore the theme of magic from the
dark supernatural magic of witches in “Macbeth” to the
lively show - style magic of tricks and illusion.
Finally, in your last practical piece in Year 11, you will
create your own drama based on the theme of witchcraft.
Each one of these dramas counts as coursework towards your
G.C.S.E. At the end, you will choose your best two marks.
At G.C.S.E. you will also start to make decisions about
lighting and sound effects with our fantastic facilities.
The studio is a great space for acting and your effects can
be amazing. We expect you to choose your own music and
lights to create mood and atmosphere and also to decide on
costumes and props in performance. Not only will you act the
part, you will look the part!
Trips
A great part of the course is that we take you to the
theatre. We took three coaches to London to see the mystery/
horror play “The Woman in Black” at the Fortune Theatre. The
whole audience screamed and Year 10 voted it the best play
they have ever seen!
We have been to Stratford upon Avon to see “Beauty and the
Beast”, Coventry to see “Blood Brothers”, Wolverhampton to
see “Of Mice and Men” and many more. Our students love these
trips and you will too.
Exams
Yes, at the end of the course there is an exam paper but
only one! And you get to write about the plays you have seen
at the theatre over the course. You are even allowed to take
your notes into the exam with you! Or you could choose to
write about “The Crucible” which we will study in Year 11.
Our results are fantastic so you know that what we teach is
good! Go to the results page and have a look.
Sometimes students are worried about performing. Don’t worry
because you won’t perform on your own but with a group.
Sometimes, students take Drama to become more confident! We
promise it will work!! Drama teaches fantastic social skills
for life and work like teamwork, problem solving and
presentation; these are skills which any employer would love
you to have. You will become more confident and assured in
presentation and this will certainly help you in a job
interview!
Think about Drama as an option, we are lively, fun,
practical and different from the classroom! Chat to Mrs
Grattan, Miss Leftwich or our Drama students if you want to
know more. Look at our sixth form students, they loved Drama
so much they carried on!
The national pass rate in Drama is 65% on average
which we completely outclass but don’t just look at our pass
rates, look at our grades, especially A*to B! These are
excellent too!
The Drama department at Polesworth produces exciting and
innovative work and is recognised as one of the best in
Warwickshire.
