Welcome To GCSE Leisure and Tourism
Leisure and Tourism is a
part of everyone’s life. It is a vocational subject, that
brings real life situations into classroom. There is some
theory, but the majority of this will be related to
student’s own experiences. They will gain a greater
understanding of this vast growth market. Students will be
positively encouraged to build portfolios at their own pace.
The GCSE allows for all abilities, students will be
encouraged to develop work at a reasonable pace, with AA*
students showing high level organizational, analysis and
evaluation skills. Students will use outings, work
experience, the internet, photographic evidence, brochures,
tickets etc, to help build their portfolios.
The course consists of three equally weighted parts:
Leisure & Tourism,
(the theory bit! - exam end of year ten)
Marketing
(Project on Alton Towers and Drayton Manor)
Customer Service
Project and role play based on work experiences)

If you like discussion, practical investigation, creating your own projects
and can be self motivated then this could be the course for you.
You will look at the way you spend your leisure
time, in a whole new way …When you know the facts!!
Unit One -
Leisure & Tourism
This unit is worth 33% of your final GCSE. You will sit an exam,
usually at then end of year ten.
This unit includes 3 sections:
The Leisure Industry
The Travel and Tourism Industry
Links between Leisure and Tourism

The idea of this unit is for you to:
Understand the important role that leisure and tourism plays in today’s
society.
Learn about the different facilities and organisations that make up the
leisure and tourism industries. Consider how leisure and tourism
industries are linked and how they work together to offer customers a good
service.
Investigate the leisure industries in the local area.
Learn about tourism destinations in the UK, where they are, what they
offer visitors and the main transport routes to them.
Understand how the industry provides products and services for people in
the UK. Unit Two -
Marketing In Leisure And Tourism
| This unit is worth 33% of your final GCSE. You will complete
a portfolio project . There is NO exam for this section.
You will produce a portfolio investigating Marketing
Activities of a Leisure & Tourism business, for example, Alton
Towers, owned by a Multi National organisation. Once a
comprehensive analysis has been completed, this has to be
compared with a similar organisation. In this example you could
compare it with Drayton Manor, a family run business.

The idea of this unit is for you to:
Understand the important role that Marketing has within
the leisure and tourism industry.
Learn about different types of marketing such as Target
Markets and Market Segments.
Understand why organisations need to carry out Market
Research. Investigate the Marketing Mix:; Product; Place;
Price and Promotions.
Learn about SWOT analysis, and perform one on your chosen
organisations. |
| Understand how the industry uses Promotional
Campaigns. As well as investigating you will design a
campaign.

Unit Three -
Customer Service
This unit is worth 33% of your final GCSE. You will complete a
portfolio project . There is NO exam for this section.
You will produce a portfolio investigating customer service
provided by an organisation.
It is envisaged that this experience be initiated as part of year
ten Work Experience.
The idea of this unit is for you to:
Understand why good customer service is vital for the leisure and
tourism industry.
Learn about the different needs of customers and how they are
met.
Understand how organisations communicate with different
customers.

| Investigate the importance of personal presentation when dealing
with customers.
Learn about how and why keeping accurate customer records are
achieved by organisations. Learn how to handle customer
complaints in a role play/work experience environment. |
