AQA GCSE Physical Education (full course)

The course takes place over two years and consists of practical and theoretical components in the following format:

 ●  Practical Component - 50%
 ●  Terminal Examination - 30%
 ●  Analytical Investigation (Coursework) - 20%

Practical (50%)

Candidates must be competent and assessed in at least four sporting activities selected from at least two of the following six National Curriculum Areas of Activity:

Athletic activities

Dance activities

Games activities

Gymnastic activities

Outdoor and Adventurous activities

Swimming activities and Water Safety

In school, pupils will be assessed in a range of activities within core and optional PE lessons.

Candidates can also be assessed in sporting activities not offered within school, for example:
 ●  Swimming;
 ●  Horse-riding;
 ●  Duke of Edinburgh;
 ●  Martial Arts;
 ●  Golf;
 ●  Snow sports;
 ●  Water sport

For practical assessments, candidates will be assessed on a variety of criteria:

 ●  Acquiring and developing skills and techniques;
 ●  Evaluating and adapting their own performance;
 ●  Demonstrating an understanding and practical application of the rules/laws and conventions of the physical activity and the roles of officials;
 ●  Demonstrating an understanding of health and safety issues and their practical application.

Pupils and teachers will work together to establish each pupil’s four strongest sporting activities.

Not only will candidates develop and improve their skills, fitness and understanding within the sporting activities covered, they will also acquire vital life skills:
 ●  Communication;
 ●  Cooperation;
 ●  Leadership;
 ●  Teamwork.

Terminal Examination (30%)

One written paper, divided in to two sections. Candidates will be required to answer both short and long questions.

During the 2 year course candidates will cover a variety of topics in depth:

 ●  Health, Fitness and Physical Activity;
 ●  Factors Affecting Performance;
 ●  Factors Affecting Participation;
 ●  Resources for Participation.

The knowledge that candidates gain will be invaluable for those choosing to follow a Physical Education related career. Here are just a few careers paths you could follow:

 ●  Physiotherapist;
 ●  Referee/Umpire;
 ●  Sports Manager;
 ●  Sports Medic;
 ●  Sport/Fitness instructor;
 ●  Dietician/Nutritionist;
 ●  Coach/Trainer;

 ●  Choreographer;
 ●  Sports Administrator.

Analytical Investigation (Coursework) (20%)

The coursework component of the course enables candidates to develop their subject knowledge in a practical and more independent way. In year 10 pupils will spend a number of weeks planning, performing and evaluating a number of training sessions in order to develop their fitness. Pupils will be assessed on their ability to use their knowledge and understanding to plan and evaluate their sessions effectively. The Analytical Investigation is divided into 5 sections:

 ●  Audit - establishing current level of fitness
 ●  Planning – how performance is to be improved
 ●  Implementation – obtaining the evidence using the applied plan
 ●  Analysis – using the evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of the applied plan
 ●  Evaluation – a critical review of the whole process

All coursework will be completed by the end of year 10, enabling candidates to focus on preparation for practical assessments and their terminal examination in year 11.
