26/04/07 Healthy School

In January this year, Polesworth International Language College joined the National Healthy Schools Programme which aims to:

• Support children and young people in developing healthy behaviours
• Help raise pupil achievement
• Help reduce health inequalities
• Help promote social inclusion

The scheme has four core themes:
• Personal, social and health education
• Healthy eating
• Physical activity
• Emotional health and well-being

Using a whole-school approach, we have to provide evidence for each of the criteria in these themes. Once this is achieved, we can apply for Healthy School Status for the school, a national award.

While the award is an important part of the scheme, ultimately, we would like to enable our students to make healthy life choices.

Work has already started on collecting evidence from the vast amount already done at P.I.L.C. in these areas. See the latest news stories on Strictly Come Dancing and Smoothies Day for more information.

New Healthy Choices System in the Canteen!

Starting on Monday the 30th April, we are introducing a colour star system to identify healthier choices of food in the canteen. A green star will mean that this is the healthiest option on offer, an orange star not quite as healthy and a red star the least healthy. This should allow students to choose the healthier options more easily and learn about the food available.
