On Tuesday 11th March year 11 attended a Revision Conference Day.
This day was set up by Mrs Rickus at the school to inform the students
about the helpful tips about the different ways in which revision can be
done. The day was launched by Mrs Grattan. She carried out fun exercises
to help the students to “connect up your brain”. She explained that this
is one way that could help the students on the day of their exams as it
helps you to wake up in the morning.
This was then followed by Mr Clarke carrying out activities to help
the students figure out what type of learner they are. He first
discussed the different types of learner in which you could be which
were visual, audio and kinaesthetic. He explained the different revision
techniques that you could use.
The school had also invited a very special person back to the school,
Mr Fowler. He introduced a session which was to do with memory. He told
the students about long term and short term memory. He explained that
the use of repetition helps you to remember things that you need to
know. Chocolate was also handed out during this session as fun and
enjoyable games were held. This helped the students to stay focused and
involved.
Mrs Rickus then took over and talked about mind maps. She discussed
the different ways in which mind maps can be created and the helpful
tips about producing them. She told the students to create their own
mind maps about drugs. They were told to only use certain key words and
lots of colour. This was said to be a very good way to revise as it
stays in you memory. Chocolate was then given out to the people with the
best mind maps.
After a short break Mr Williams then introduced “revision
techniques”. This was an important discussion as he explained ways of
revising and the best ways to revise based on you way of learning. He
then introduced Daniel Challis who spoke about his own personal
experiences during his GCSE years. He told the students the best ways to
plan revision and explained to then that it is important to not over do
it.
Mr Addison then showed the students the different ways to create a
revision time table. He showed the students how to lay out the table and
put their exam times in to see what revision needs to be done first
based on the dates of their particular exams. He then asked the students
to create their time table to show them how it should be set out. This
task was completed very well by the students and they showed great
cooperation.
Mrs Bailey was then next to talk to the students about “dealing with
exam stress”. She spoke to the students about ways in which they could
stay calm within the run up to the exams. Mrs Bailey spoke about diet,
she mentioned the correct things that should be eaten to help ensure
your sugar levels are not to high and also that your brain is healthy
enough to take in all the knowledge that you require. She also mentioned
things that allow you to relax a night for example have a warm bath and
avoid tea and coffee.
At the end of the conference Mrs Harris thanked all the students for
their cooperation and also thanked the staff for their wonderful efforts
at introducing the students to revision.
To finish off the conference day students were shown a slide show of
lots of different pictures of them through out the years.
As a student I found the revision conference extremely helpful and
enjoyable. I believe that the teachers made a great effort in organising
this day and worked hard throughout. This has really helped me to
understand how and why I should revise and the best ways to suit me. One
other way that made the day enjoyable was the tasty chocolate!
